Barranquilla’s Carnival

Read the paragraph about Juan Marquez in Barranquilla’s  Carnival.

Barranquilla's Carnival  is one of the most important folklore celebration.

The Carnival starts on the Saturday before  Ash Wednesday (catholic holiday) with the Battle of the Flowers, which is considered one of the main activities. Then, The Great Parade on Sunday and Monday is marked by an orchestra festival with Caribbean and Latin bands. Tuesday signals the end of the carnival, announced by the burial of Joselito Carnaval, who is mourned by everyone.

This is Juan Marquez. He is from Barranquilla but currently he lives in London. He studies modern languages at university. Every year he crosses the ocean just to  get to Barranquilla. He visits his family and comes because he loves the carnival and doesn´t like to lose any of the four days of intense festivities. During the carnival the normal activities are paralyzed because the city gets busy with street dances, musical and masquerade parades. Juan participates in the parade with joy and as soon as he listens to the music, he dances the cumbia while musicians play the drums and wind ensambles. There are also many  other dancing shows like the Spanish paloteo, the African congo and indigenous mico y micas. Everything is joy during the festival, Juan throws lots of foam. Certainly he enjoys himself a lot. At the end of the day, Juan is quite exhausted, so  he rarely goes to the parties at night. He usually relaxes at home after a long and fun parade.
